By Bernice Sandler, Lisa A. Silverberg and Roberta M. Hall

The Chilly Classroom Climate: A Guide to Improve the Education of Women, by Bernice Resnick Sandler, Lisa A. Silverberg, and Roberta M. Hall.

The Chilly Classroom Climate: A Guide to Improve the Education of Women, by Bernice Resnick Sandler, Lisa A. Silverberg, and Roberta M. Hall was published in 1996 by the National Association for Women in Education. The Association has since disbanded and the book is no longer in print.

Eventually the entire book will be available on this web site. In the meantime, check your college library. A copy of the book was initially sent to every college president in the country and that copy may now be in the college library. A copy may also be available via an interlibrary loan.

The Chilly Classroom Climate describes more than 50 ways in which men and women students, sitting side by side, often have very different experiences, such as women being interrupted more often, called by name less often, receiving less eye contact and receiving praise more for their appearance than for their work. The book describes college classrooms, the influence of teaching style and pedagogy, the intersections of race and gender, the importance of including women in the curriculum and how gender affects faculty evaluation. It offers more than 270 specific recommendations for action that administrators, department chairs, faculty members and students can use to warm the climate for women and other groups.
